Serving up a divine mixture of jazz, pop and indie rock on his forthcoming album, Nine is the Magic Number, Indy’s own Joel Tucker is gaining some serious attention these days. You can find him all over town, including venues like Chatterbox, The Thirsty Scholar, and The Jazz Kitchen – where he will release his newest album, with The Tucker Brothers Group, on December 18th.
“Nine is the Magic Number” Song Sneak Peek
The Tucker Brothers Group consists of Joel Tucker, Nick Tucker, Sean Imboden, and Brian Yarde. I recently got the opportunity to sit with Joel and ask him a few questions about the upcoming album.
In the quaint, locally owned Monon Coffee Co. in Broad Ripple, Joel can be found cupping in his hands a piping hot mug of organic tea, twiddling his thumbs, and flicking around a crumpled straw wrapper from the customer before.
After spending only about an hour with Joel, the true passion he has for music and art becomes pleasantly obvious.
Quite modestly, Joel maintains that there’s always something to be learned for everyone. “Always be a student. That’s one of the most important things to realize,” he says.
There are many musicians who have “taught” Joel, so to speak.
Noting musical inspirations that span from John Coltrane to Radiohead, Joel is no stranger to genre fusion. “I like to think of my genre as ‘modern jazz’,” he says.
Joel pulls from many sources of inspiration on Nine is the Magic Number. “People can be very interesting to me,” he laughs. “’Forgetful Girl’ is about a person, ‘Ouroboros’ is a symbol for infinity, and ‘Shakshuka’ is about a food. I say have these ideas in mind, and if you like it, use it. If you don’t like it, scrap it.”
Many interesting and wonderful ideas and concepts have gone into Nine is the Magic Number, and it’s sure to be a hit around town with people of all generations!
